Well hello Beach Cottage New York touring ladies, here today we have a little bit of what I have been up to and What to Wear to a Blog Conference

A few of you have asked me for What I Wore and I have been reliably informed by a certain fashion blogger to put it out there…hmm, now What to Wear to a blog Conference….let me tell you now there are no high fashion things here, I relied heavily on my uniform for this trip, little black dresses, stripes & neutrals (hello The Gap khakis and boyfriend shirts, I heart you) and so far so good…

Anyway, I must tell you about one thing.

The Dry bar.

Hello.

If you ever happen to find yourself  in New York, do not pass Go, move directly to this blow dry bar…

Oooh yeah baby, it rocks.

There is one very good thing about having a friend who is a fashion and beauty blogger – you get in on all sorts of foofing and spritzing that ordinarily you might never bother with…this was booked before we left Australia to get us all zushed for the conference and oh boy did this place zush so very well.

I don’t know about you but I don’t treat myself to getting my hair blow dried, or you might call that blow outs, or zushing for that matter, enough… to me it always has seemed a big luxury…indeed this was the first time ever that I have been for a blow dry other than my regular hair appointment….not anymore, this was totally worth it and the next time I have an occasion where I need my hair to look good I will be investing the dollars in it.

This place though took it all the way, a very clever business idea combining getting your hair done with a fabulously luxurious surrounding… but not a hairdressery black leather and chrome feel… the styling was impeccable…kinda modern shabby, all ultra-white, popped with yellow in the flowers and accessories…a great look if you like shabby but live in a modern house, which I don’t and probs never will.. 20120805-02-IMG_8578

…but I will definitely be incorporating some of the ideas in here in my old cottage – I love the way the flowers ran to a theme in that they were all yellow with a few white and yellow and made the white pop, but were different varieties in different styled vases on about every surface that wasn’t being used to zush…

I loved this water too…anyone know where you can buy these dispensers?  I would love one of these for the Sydney summer and bbq’s coming up…

Everything was styled with these yellow pops…

Even the drinks were colour-co-ordinated…I ordered one for me, even though I am allergic to it, duh…there just happened to be a lil person who managed to help me out with that one

Beach Cottage conference uniform…neutral pants, white shirt, stripe scarf & blazer + a pop of aqua shoes

20120805-13-IMG_4313

Here’s the hair with a dress later in the afternoon from the blow dry…I had the curls which I knew would droop …and they sure did, the humidity was humongous and it was still hot in the evening..

20120805-14-IMG_4296

My feet below before when they were only about twice their normal size at lunch….a few hours later they were pretty gross, they were much bigger and we were on our way from lunch to a book launch on the Upper East Side – we popped out of the restaurant to hail a taxi, hahaha that was our first mistake, oh there were plenty of cabs, just none that were un-occupied…so we hopped on the subway, which sounds pretty glam perhaps, you know dress, heals, subway, New York?  In reality it was about 40 degrees down there and my feet were 65 times bigger than my shoes and with each step I took the pain got worse…and now sporting blisters in places I didn’t think one could get a blister…but being the trouper that I struggled through…

20120805-15-IMG_8665

and what I have worn the rest of the time…just casuals, messy hair and scarf

20120805-16-sarah-abeach-cottage

Ok that’s it from this little update, I am on the homerun here, have to be honest, I am ready to get back to Australia now – Miss Beach Cottage sent me a picture of the beach yesterday and it’s lovely and warm – people in bikinis…

Sigh to that for Winter

See you soon, I am off to buy some hawt Anthro shoes today, I meant to get a picture of them because I have been thinking about them all through the conference…yep other people were being all professional re their blogs, I was dreaming of Anthro linens and shoes…errrm people these shoes are man oh man divine…we are talking wedge, we are talking vintage style, we are talking Mary-Jane, we are talking RED, yah

Sarah

How cool! I’ve never had just a blow out, either, but getting it done when I get my hair cut is the best part about the trip to the hairdresser’s (as long as they know what they are doing!)

    Your “uniform” looks great!

  2. I love the BC uniform. It was the first thing I ever noticed and it’s still my favourite. Well, you know me and stripes. It’s like love or something. ;)

Loving the yellow on white palette of the blow bar. Wondering if Hubby will allow an all white, yellow and grey makeover for our living area… Hmmm.

So glad you’re enjoying yourself! I can’t wait to hear all about it. Expect to be twitter stalked.

  3. Jennifer says:

There’s nothing like having someone else blow dry your hair! It looks like you had a wonderful time!

  4. Robynne says:

You look very glamorous in your LBD…shoes gorgeous…hair gorgeous….and not bad knees either!! Robx

  5. Robynne says:

p.s. it’s 4 in the afternoon here in England…watching Andy Murray flatten Federer for the gold medal and I’ve just been handed a Jacobs Creek bubbly!!…and it pouring with hail and thunder and lightening (but not in London yet). Robx

    • sarah says:

yes I heard the weather is not good again…wouldn’t mind watching that with a bubbly though x

  6. Rukmini Roy says:

You know sarah, I grew up in the hills…and when I used to visit granny in calcutta, which is pretty hot and humid, I use to have very similar troubles. IT SUCKS and you cannot do anything about it. have lots of cucumber. It’ll cool you down.

  7. Emma Tandy says:

sarah you look fab, glad your having a great time in new york.

By the way sweetstyle.com.au sell the drinks dispenser jars !

  8. Ellie says:

Love the LBD look – all glam and fab!!
Sounds like you had a great time.

  9. Vicki S says:

You look great Sarah! I like your casual look:) I love your blog, especially since I just bought an old cottage in Vancouver,B.C. Canada, and have a fun project ahead of me!
If you get a chance go to Alice’s Tea Cup for scones, it’s just like being in Alice in Wonderland.
You can buy the water dispensers online, or at Pier1 or World Market, not sure if you have those in Australia.
    Hugs,
    Vicki

  10. Sad about the tootsies, mine do the same. I guess that’s why I am an avid supporter of winter travelling! I have a dodgy valve and varicous vein in my left leg and sometimes it gets to be double the size of the right. doesn’t hurt though. I find that the shoes, even though they are a bit chunky, with wobble boards in them- Fit flops( cheap in the USA) really work wonders in summer and are ever so comfy. I think I have about 10 pairs- even sequin ones!

I must say that your casual outfits really do speak to me! I am the same with my hair I have never had it ‘set’ well that’s what the old girls used to call it- a bit different to your blow out, but the same theory! I guess that is why I prefer a longer style, so that you can just whip it up with a clip or into a glamorous knot of some type. mine is way too short at the moment (I have gone a bit thin on top so am all anti colour and am growing out my all over white and grey!- I’m looking very cruella deville) HHmmmn long grey hair might be interesting!

    • sarah says:

yes I prefer a longer style for that reason too….I do think though that a bit like nice shoes and a good bag, having your hair done is good…I learnt that from a blogging conference, hahahaha

  11. Trish says:

WOW looks like you are having a blast and I’m totally your at Anthro!!!!

Would love to know where you got that pretty blazer from?

Hope you enjoy the rest of you time in NYC :)

  12. Aawww, you look lovely!! That blow out bar is the best idea, tho I have to admit the messy bun is still my fave! Red shoes sound fab, the turqouise ones look gorgeous and may I please ask where you got those skinny pants? Looking good!! xx

  13. B says:

I love your style! Love that you notice the flowers in a salon! So cute!

Can’t wait to see the red shoes. Red being my fav colour and Shoes being my very favourite things…..

You looked smashing by the way …

    • sarah says:

thank you very much B, I love shoes too, I haven’t bought red shoes though for a long time, these are spesh x

  14. bigwords says:

    Looking fabulous my love. Fabulous!!

    • sarah says:

thank you very much my love…your ears must be burning, I was talking about you the other day… :-) xx

  15. Johanna says:

I’ve never had a blow-out either! Seems far too indulgent for day to day, but what a great idea for the conference – and you look great too! Seems like the Aussie contingent are having a great time – pls bring back lots of great tips :)

  16. Marnie says:

I have longed to open a salon like this, but with make-up too! I better get moving!!!!
You look beautiful Sarah, hope you’re having a good time.
I think the dispenser is from Pottery Barn.
    x Marnie

  17. Alice says:

I believe I saw those gorgeous glass dispensers on pottery barn web site Sarah… I am coveting them too… I feel you pain re you poor feet…Only mine don’t have to be swollen to get blisters…Any shoe does it to me, I spend a small fortune on band aids (yep even thongs or others call them flip flops)…I am yet to find shoes that are kind to my feet… Love you uniform and you look super chic in that black dress! I haven’t been to the hairdressers (or anything like it) since December 2011… For me it is a major luxury, one that I am desperate for but can never seem to find the time (it is soooo way down the list)…I have a tendency of falling a sleep when they wash my hair(they actually need to shake me awake -poor souls I always give them such a scare lol)… Maybe next month, I’ll make it my Saturday mission ;)… I love the picture of yesterdays post…The colours were warming…Hopefully the weather will keep warming up(it isn’t doing it fast enough for me though lol)I am so impatient for spring…

  18. Vicki says:

Sarah, Being that I originate from the East Coast, I am so enjoying your travels! Just got back from the area not a few weeks ago. NYC is an oven in summer, how well I know! Try putting your feet up whenever possible, wearing flats is difficult on hot city streets with lots of walking involved. If the humidity keeps giving your hair fits, don’t use conditioner. :-)

  19. Karen says:

    IHi Sara,
I also love the water dispenser, so if you do find out where to source, would you please let me know? I have found a beautiful one on this website http://www.tlbc.com.au Look under Apothecary Beverage dispenser with tap but beautiful as it may be, I would be worried about stability. Did you ask when you got your hair done?
    cheers,
    Karen NZ

  20. Kat says:

Ooh new red shoes, do show us a pic!!! :)
What a fab idea to get your hair blow dryed and the venue looked very lush.
Love your little pics of all the flowers and styling.
I bet you and your roomie had a ball ;)

  21. suzanne says:

hi sarah, I know exactly where to find that sought of water dispenser on the not far from you BC. Alfresco Emporium at Collaroy has them. You sit them on the bench. Not too badly price either.
THat’s funny a little old lady up the road from me sells bunches of flower for $3.00 and at the moment “yellow” is the colour, so our house looks like spring is springing even though it is still freezing. The hair bar looks like a dream bar for women. Enjoy!!

  22. Ellie says:

Pottery Barn now deliver to Aus and have a great plastic version – great for outdoor use.

    http://www.potterybarn.com/products/vallarta-outdoor-drink-dispenser/?pkey=cserveware

You looked fab. Love that LBD.

  23. Jasmine says:

What a great idea! This would be a perfect place to go before a wedding (because I am rubbish at doing my own hair!). Love the pops of yellow too – what a fun colour.

As for the drink dispenser, this is the only place in Australia that I have managed to find them so far -http://www.tlbc.com.au/vmchk/Homewares/Beverage-Dispensers.html I want to get one or two to use during the Summer … and at every other chance I get!

Love your BC uniform. It’s so effortlessly chic!

    x Jasmine

  24. alison says:

Ooooh, that blow out salon is zush porn.

We have to always remember to nurture our souls, even if it’s just a walk through beautiful surroundings.

    alison

  25. Laura says:

Sarah, you look SO pretty in the last picture, you’re eyes are stunning

  26. Lauren says:

Seriously – someone open a dry bar franchise in Austraila. Stat. Go New York, ever the innovators.
    Great blog sarah x
