Phew, Beach Cottage ladies.  That is about all I can say.  I had forgotten the pace of New York City, have to say I love it!

So I arrived here after a very long journey from lovely Sydney town – it’s a pretty long flight and the time changes turn the whole thing into an almost out-of-body experience….I found myself at one point walking down Madison Avenue as if I were literally in a dream, I don’t know what time my body thought it was but my head was like it was in heaven!

So just a few pics of what I have been up to – hello to the Beach Cottage Crew, I wish you guys were with me…I am doing my usual thing, walking around buildings, looking at old stuff and eating too much food.

I love the street vendors, I had forgotten that from last time…

OH and the signage.  Oh my!  If you have been with me for a while, you will know I am a sucker for a good bit of signage….just such great Camera Candy…and here spoilt for choice, for sure.

I have not seen too many really old buildings yet, though I did see some on my way in from the airport that I loved…hoping to spy a few more tomorrow…

20120801-08-IMG_3789 20120801-07-IMG_3764_thumb

And the deli on every corner!  Oh me oh my!  I heart you bagels, corned beef, pastrami, and coffee..

I did a lot of walking and snapping – I love street photography…I don’t get to do too much of this where I live….it’s more kinda stuff down the beach and the odd city thing from Sydney….in NYC definitely challenging, different light (it was overcast & warm today) and lots going on to focus on…and lots to try and keep out of the shots too!  I played with the settings on my camera the whole time…

And the honking!  I do remember that from last time, but it still surprised me how much people honk…

Clearly no-one takes any notice of this whatsoever

I had a few things on my list to do here, but actually I didn’t want to get too caught up in a list, having been here before, it’s good that some of the typical sightseeing things I have already done…so this time I just wanted to soak it all up…and just be free to roam around and do nothing, getting lost behind my camera and just wondering…by the looks of the itinerary for BlogHer, keeping these days fairly low-key is a good thing, it looks like this conference will be full-on!

20120801-12-IMG_3754 20120801-13-IMG_3790 20120801-14-IMG_3745

It’s so noisy and crazy and colourful and wonderful and brash, I really tried to capture that…

20120801-15-IMG_3871 20120801-16-IMG_3920 20120801-17-IMG_3919

And in the very middle of all this hustle and bustle, huge buildings, traffic and honking, these two beauties…amazing..

Riding the subway was on of my to-do’s…I hopped on uptown and road it all the way down to Wall Street

20120801-19-IMG_3728 20120801-20-IMG_3732 20120801-21-IMG_3731 20120801-22-IMG_3739

I love taking in the stuff that is different…vehicles are always different…you wouldn’t seen one like this in Sydney nor probably the guy walking beside it

20120801-23-IMG_3742 20120801-24-IMG_3793 20120801-25-IMG_3756 20120801-26-IMG_3885 20120801-27-IMG_3939 20120801-28-IMG_3952

I travelled over on Qantas, the Spirit of Australia, this is the American version….there is a bit of a story to tell re all that, if you follow me on Twitter, you’ll already know, not the best start to the trip…

…it’s funny when you see things you normally only see on tv, I am sure there are many people like me who as young girls watched tv shows with American school buses like this….

I’m such an Uptown Girl you know Winking smile

20120801-31-IMG_3854 20120801-32-IMG_3749 20120801-33-IMG_3759 20120801-34-IMG_3783

So about halfway through the day, on the way to Statten Island, I think, oh I might ask someone to take a photo of me so I can put it on here for the Beach Cottage Crew, even though we are Skyping so that I can see Barley and them (isn’t technology so amazing???? I have been talking to my kids and watching them on my phone!  I mean hello I can remember when you went overseas you had to walk down the street to a phone box and queue at a phone, now I they can see and hear me as if I was just next door!)…so I ask this guy to take my pic, turns out to be German and hand him my camera….errrm hello he chopped me in half, while a gust of wind went past and it’s all skew-wiff…anyway, the thought was there…

20120801-35-IMG_3772 20120801-36-IMG_3865 20120801-37-IMG_3938 20120801-38-IMG_3971 20120801-39-IMG_3960

Had a lil’ ride on this old girl…

…have to say here, that the ferry in my hometown is pretty hard to beat…nothing like coming around the corner to the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House…this lady gives it a run for its money though Smile

20120801-41-IMG_3848 20120801-42-IMG_3826

And that is about it from me from my first few nights in the Big Apple…

See you soon, I hope you enjoyed the pics, thank you to all of those who have messaged me saying they can’t wait to see the pics, these aren’t of vintage things or an old cottage on Sydney’s beaches, but so very much part of me and my journey

Enjoy NYC. The weather was a bit blah today but I think Thursday will be a warmer one. If you miss Blighty, you should pop to Myers of Keswick down in the West Village (delicious sausage rolls) and you can even mosey on down to the Meatpacking district for a nice cocktail or delicious breakfast at The Diner (nice to sit outside and people watch). Enjoy! Lx

  2. Robyn says:

Are you seeing any plays? I heard today on The View that Woody Herrels play is VG. (Of course he was the one saying so.

Love your photos. . . You captured the flavor of the Big Apple!

Does the heat compare to Aussie land?

  12. Cheryl says:

Oh my, it’s so funny to me to read how you’re fascinated by things I see every day! (I live 2 hrs from NYC.)Love the pics, I think in the one where the man in the red jumpsuit is emptying the garbage, that you have captured an Amazonian woman in the middle (verrrry tall, blonde, in pink dress). She must be a model. I also think the Spiderman with a fanny pack is quite New York-ish. Can’t wait to see more of the sights through your eyes. Have fun! (Has any man whistled at you yet?)

  13. Karen says:

Fabulous photos Sarah. Keep them coming please!

  15. Susan says:

    Great pictures, Sarah!

You’re a braver woman than I – there is no way I would give my camera to a stranger, even if it is to take my picture – I’m so cynical, I’m worried they would run off with it (maybe I’ve lived in a big city like Chicago too long…)

  16. ComfyChair says:

Love New York, love your pictures. Hope you have a blast!

  17. Wow you lucky girl!!! Great pics and love the skew-wiff one of you! Keep them coming please!?! Enjoy!!! x

  18. Lovely photos! So interesting to read about visitors and their take on NYC – it certainly is a crazy place but so vibrant and interesting. Enjoy!!

  19. Great photos, Sarah! I didn’t get to NYC on my last trip to the US (saw Chicago & Dallas instead) but I’ve always wanted to go! Hi Sarah!
I lived in NYC for two years and miss Manhattan every day. I simply loved the energy you feel just walking around! You need to visit a ‘tag sale’ for the vintage stuff and there are auction houses in New York where you can find ahh-mazing things!! Have a great time! ox

Hope you have an amazing trip, look forward to seeing more photos xx

  30. Claire says:

Love NY Sarah, just love it! We were last there in October and, like you, as we’d seen all the ‘key’ sights before, I really enjoying snapping some pictures of the street life. We visited some new places as well that we couldn’t squeeze in the first time round: The High Line is definitely worth a walk along. I blogged some pictures here: http://www.thedigitaliris.net/2012/03/stateside-nyc.html
    Enjoy the city : ) x

  31. Jenni Johnston says:

HI there, I have been following mrs woog and babymac in NY (following their blogs, not actually following them..) so its great to see it from your perspective now.
    Great photos and commentary.

  34. Angela says:

I’m kind’a with Susan’s comment up there. You handed some dude your camera?! The other side of me wants to believe in the good of people, though. Maybe if you expect good, there will be good. Benefit of the doubt, ya know? Also, are you by yourself there? Fist bump to you on that one. :)
Love the pics. And the dude getting the trash/qantas cracked me up. (that sucked)
    Have fun!

    • sarah says:

yes I did hand some dude my camera, he was obviously a tourist (it was down near Liberty) but still I won’t be doing it again x

  35. Teresa says:

Please go to Sephora and use the bathrooms….I’m told they are breathtaking. hmmmm, or someone is pulling my leg….
    let me know?
    xx Marnie

    • sarah says:

oh really?! we had Sephora in the UK so it’s not really new to me, but it didn’t have bathrooms lol, thanks for the tip…I have been told by a couple of Aussie girls who are already here that the make up is soooooooooooo much cheaper, like just about everything else in Australia lol…Stila is half price, yay x

  40. Kat says:

What an adventure and how lucky to be back for a second visit! :)
It’s definitely on my list of places to visit.
Loving your pics, that sum up NYC as I imagine it to be.
Hope you are going to do a “what I wore in NYC” post at some stage too :)
    Keep enjoying!

  41. Loving the pics – fascinated by all the wee differences in the details of the everyday!

Keep up the good work – I am a (shabby chic vintagey shade of) green with envy in the nicest possible way! If I can’t be there at least you are :)

  42. HRH Sarah says:

Great photos, thanks for sharing New York. I live only 8 hours away, but have never been. To think that you jumped on a plane and went through different time zones to get there! Sometimes I yearn for simpler times, but I have to say modern technology does open up so many possibilities.

  43. Jeannie-JB says:

Wow, as usual your photos ROCK!! I wanna be you when I grow up! :)

  44. Jackie P says:

    Great pix! Thanks.

  45. Aaah! I am SO bummed that I’ve been out of the blogging loop for a week or so. Had I known you’d only be four hours away from me, I totally would have driven to NY to pal around the streets with you (stalk you – whatever you want to call it) for a day. I just submitted the final BlogHer application today. Had I done so sooner, I may have been at the conference too. Geeeeez. Love your photos. Spent the last hour catching up with your trip in reverse. Enjoy the rest of your time in NY!

  46. …and it’s so cool to see your perspective of things that are ordinary for me (i.e. FedEx trucks, yellow school buses). I wonder what your buses look like. The city itself seems so foreign to me though every time I visit. Although it’s only a hop, skip and a jump away….completely different worlds.

  47. {oc cottage} says:

as a cali girl…the closet i have ever been to nyc is watching “law & order”! ;} so interesting to see the big apple through your eyes…and lens! your pics of lady liberty truly put a lump in my throat! and you are an EXCELLENT tour guide! thx a mil for this fascinating post!

    m ^..^

    • sarah says:

thank you very much lovely lady…have to say that I think it would be worth a trip one day for you – amazing for a few days, not sure if I could live here really though, not after what I have got used to xo

  48. Red says:

I love NYC. I’ve been 3 times in the last 4 years, because I cannot get enough in just one visit. I love your description of walking in a dream down Madison Ave. After the long haul flight, the first few days do feel like delirium. I can feel the air, and smell the street smells through your pics.
In my next life… I think I’ll try for a NY pigeon.
