G’day lovelies, how you cooking… checking in with some beachy coastal decor on the Beach Cottage deck today!

I am into things hanging at the moment, and still into the blue phase in Beach Cottage Land, I must say I thought this phase wouldn’t last very long but it seems it’s here to stay…blue just says coastal doesn’t it?

Mix it in with a few nautical things and the odd bit of rustic and all is good in the world.

Here’s what I started with…

Of course, throwing in some lavender may well remind one of the hills of Provence, if one has indeed been to the hills of Provence.

If not, one can just throw them around anyway and dream…

Errrm these are a new kind of lavender, they are called Drunken Lavender ;-)  ….I am not sure why they were behaving as if they had been to Provence and sat in an outdoor cafe in the mid-day sun and had a little tipple too many but they were all like this, I picked a huge bunch and dotted them around and all of them were doing this head down droopy thing…

Very much loving these white lanterns from my fave lil Nordic boutique…I must say I held off buying these when they first came out, I wasn’t sure I liked them in white (truly) but now they are cropping up all over the show in this tatty old cottage of ours…

…the other night I hung them around with the old weathered ones too from the trees , we lit the fire pit (more on our fire pit here if you missed it) and lit the lanterns and it looked lovely – with these I like how it’s just a simple tealight in there and you can shut the door once they are lit…

To make this a tad on the nautical side I hung these fishing floats too

and a shell – I just tied this shell with some fishing wire

…had to be a starfish too ;-)

I did this coastal tablescape for Mr Beach Cottage’s birthday – c’mon do you think he noticed coastal things hanging around?  Ahem that would be a no… errrrm I don’t think he would notice if I died my hair blue actually…

…but it was an excuse to do something I like doing and frankly the rest of the house is a bomb-site, because the cupboards are still waiting to be put up hence kitchen stuff everywhere and on top of all that all the internal doors are being replaced…talk about mess!

…so I came out here, did this and thought you might like it too???

Happy Friday Beach Cottage ladies…

All this foofing floats your boat so keep doing it!!

I made a mobile from shells and driftwood (I asked the tour guide if it was ok to collect it) from Lord Howe Island that hangs outside my kitchen window. It brings back lovely feelings and memories all the time and it cost nothing.

lovely Sarah… Really like it…I love the image you described with the fire pit and the lanterns twinkling away… So intimate and beautiful… Your kids will remember those nights… Such a beautiful thing to do :)…I love those lanterns from Ikeas too but I want a massive one (unfortunately they also come with a massive price tag – lol)….Hope you have a lovely long weekend :)…

  4. Kelly says:

    I love the white lantern.

  5. just a quick question Sarah- ….How do you attach your fishing line to the balcony roof??

So you have cross wooden bars up there to attach them to?
Just wondering as I seem to have little hooks everywhere!!

    Melissa :)

  6. PS- looks divine for a BC birthday- and c’mon it’s not really about the bday boy anyway is it! ;)

  7. Rukmini Roy says:

Fabulous. I’m in love with the wicker chargers. The other day In hypercity I saw some really cute nautical looking lanterns but they were priced at 700 bucks. I think I’ll wait for the sale to happen. 700 bucks! Blasted price.

  8. Happy Birthday to Mr. BC, Sarah! Did you give him the day off from hanging cabinets? lol! Love your tablescape. The pattern on those napkins are so pretty! :)

My daughter and her friend drilled through shells and hung them with fishing line in their Fairy garden, along with a few sparkly things a couple of years ago now, they are still up and look gorgeous! I have a beautiful collection of shells and I put them in apothecary jars in the bathroom last year. Some were collected from qld when I was a child on holidays. I will keep them forever!
Your hubby would be like most blokes, more interested in the food, booze and company than any decorations!

  10. Susan says:

Beautiful Sarah, as usual. Are the shells and starfish from your beaches?

  11. Aisling says:

Love the tablescape Sarah. Where did you get he fab napkins? The starfish made me smile as I just finished bleaching mine after I spilt red wine on them in a tablescaping mishap! Better hanging from fishing line I think!

  12. Melinda says:

love love love that photo with the white lantern and bokeh ish green background – how ever did you acheive that?

Birthday styling looks fab, noticed or not. Sometimes a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do to get some semblance of normality and pretty into life – bet you felt better when it all looked lovely xx

  13. Kate says:

It looks terrific Sarah – I’ve had the same thing happen with that type of lavender too. I have a husband with a birthday today also, you’ve made me feel like making a bit more of an effort than I’d originally planned! Looks like I’ll be treating myself to some flowers then…

    Kate x

Oh I do love those lanterns from Ikea. Wanted to snavel some up when I did my first official visit to Ikea last month in Melbourne, but alas not enough room in my case.
I did grab one of the lovely stripey mats I have been after for so long and now wish I had gotten two more! (Sadly no Ikea here in Tas.)
The big question though is what is on the menu for Mr BC’s b’day dinner?
I hope you all have a lovely night.
It looks as pretty as a picture :)

  15. le_third says:

Loving the pale blue (it IS my fave colour after all – my business logo is pale blue, caramel and white). Yes it does say beachy, even in the colder months, it makes us feel fresh somehow. Love the pics. Hope you can visit me soon in blogland – I have been away for a while, but I am back and loving catching up on all my fave blogs – including this one. Happy weekend:)

  23. hayley says:

Oh I really really really love these photos.. I could look at them all day.. We are planning to do our house with touches of coastal too. We are only 500m from the Beach so we are wanting to do this. We have a timber table that we are wanting to do in a beach theme.. as in paint. What did you do with your table, and what paints did you paint it with? I look so forward to receiving your emails each week. Have a great day.

  24. Sarah-Jane says:

Beautiful photos again Sarah……I was just wondering what camera you would recommend??

  25. Mog says:

I just recently found your blog and am enjoying reading everything. I’d love a beachy look for my patio. You’ve given me some great ideas. Your deck is absolutely droolworthy. Where did you get those napkins? They have that same lil Nordic boutique across the pond here too. I’ve been known to shop there. Hope Mr BC had a nice birthday and gets to the kitchen cupboards. One of my friends redid a kitchen in the same cupboards, came out cute. Good choice.

  26. how2home says:

  27. T.J. says:

Your home is absolutely stunning. I have seen pictures of it all over the web! :) I was dying to know where you got the coffee table and am gutted to find out I’d actually have to luck — and work! — into it! :) Beautiful.
