G’day Beach Cottage ladies, well I have some interesting news in the house, we have a little puppy in Beach Cottage Land, pics to come soon, if I ever get to blog again…

…and right in the middle of the first day of a puppy and the Summer House paint job and waiting for the bathroom door to be fitted, we decide to spruce up the bedroom…mad? yes, but it’s all about the beachy decor and DIY’s in this old place!

This is the Work In Progress right now…

…obviously in this bedroom there is white and as I type this the prep work is done…there was quite a lot of filling to do and over near the window, as it faces North and gets very hot in the sun some of the paint had gotten very grubby & peely..this was sanded down and filled

I don’t know if you remember but there was a point where I was having wallpaper in here, on the last spruce up, but at the last minute, once I had decided and had the paper in my hands, I went with just paint, thinking that wallpaper was not right for me.

So this time, I didn’t even consider that route but knew I wanted not all white…don’t gasp…

and we are all about Taubmans right now…great price, great quality & love the results…it does what it says on the tin and I love that…Easy Coat, yes sirree…I get a LOT of questions about white paint & white colours, really there are a few I like, Dulux Whisper White rocks about any room, but on a quick job like this I go for a simple flat white like this one…it means no cutting in and it’s super easy to just slap on & go

Taubmans white paint

That is the beauty of decorating with white though, you can, pretty much, decide to throw in any other colour and it will work

So, as in the front door, and seeing as we are in the Beach Cottage Blue Phase, as opposed to the Beach Cottage Frenchy Phase, I proposed to my long suffering husband an accent wall…there are two key camps for this wall….see below…the grey/putty camp and the light aqua blue camp.

Yes there were Beach Cottage  Eyebrows.

I went out this morning to buy the paint while Mr Beach Cottage waited patiently, paint brush in hand, while finishing off the en-suite bathroom (all white, no debate)  for me to come back from the paint shop with whatever accent colour took my fancy…

these are the colours in question…

….Beach Cottage Blue Phase…still pretty neutral… coastal beachy blues  ….Peaceful Bay & Open Air are pretty coastal colours…

or more muted sea pebble & putty…names like Seahawk & Sea Bubbles are appropriate

I was instructed by Mr Beach Cottage to also buy things like filler…trying here to look enthusiastic about it…I do wonder quite how we go through so much multi-purpose filler in our lives…I am not asking or complaining though ;-)

So where we are right now?

All the white is done…is there or is there not something about the pure, clean freshness of the pouring and applying of just simple white…

…all the woodwork is done, the windows are filled, sanded down, prepped and painted, the blinds have been washed and look great & the curtains are washed and out on the line drying in the fresh air…

All we need now is the accent wall in the colour…

It’s going on as I type…I will be back very soon to show you…

There is one small problem in this scenario, neither Mr Beach Cottage or I have had any sleep, we had a sad little puppy by our side all night…so the accent wall is looking a bit dodgy…

See you soon friends…which colour would you have gone for?  muted greys & putty or coastal beachy blues…

Yours from Beach Cottage White & Puppy Land

p.s. I never thought we would find a puppy that suited us to a tee,  we did though….LOVE!

Can’t wait to see………coastal be achy blues !!! And the new puppy !!!!!!

  2. Tricia Rose says:

Winter Breeze did it for me ~

Congratulations on your new woofer – I always think the Hand of Destiny is involved in these matches, almost as much fun as having a baby without the 2am feeds! Name?

    • sarah says:

yes it’s an eye-opener for us though!

we were talking about you last night funnily enough…we were looking for a cushion for the puppy and your linen & white one was voted the comfiest and softest but then we all said no cos we love it for us haha

no name as of yet…plenty of discussion though! x

  3. Oh I am just so not a feature wall person! I do loove all white! Colour is just too hard for me, I’d rather do colour in the cushions and what not. I think it’s because all my furniture is so damn heavy to move in order to paint, so I haven’t ever done it!!!

But I do looove dogs and can’t wait to cast my eyes on the new baby! Doesn’t it just break your heart when they are unhappy? And of course they can’t tell you what’s wrong, just like a newborn really!

    • sarah says:

ahh I am not a feature wall person so who knows how long this one will stay! x

yes the puppy did break my heart last night…he seems much happier today though x

  4. Kim Buca says:

awww come on sarah how can ya do this to us?? throw the we got a puppy out there and no pic!!!! i wanna see!! i wanna see!!!! you have so many things going on it is gonna look fab!!!!

  5. Kirsty says:

Congrats on the new puppy! I still vividly remember those first two of three nights and all the 3am potty trips outside! Hope the puppy has a more settled night tonight and looking forward to seeing which colour you chose! xo K

  6. Nancy says:

I love an accent wall … and the colour I would go with is the bottom of the greyish trio, Miller Mood. I think that would look quite stunning. I’m so jealous that you’re new puppy parents … would love to have a woofer but already have more cats than I’m allowed. Give him/her big puppy hugs for me! :) Can’t wait to see how this latest paint adventure turns out!

  7. Melinda says:

    Love to see some DIY

For me, Id go with putty/grey colours, esp where I live as outside we seem to have a lot of Victorian Grey ( weather wise ) HOWEVER in Sunny Sydney I can imagine a beachy blue being just perfect – looking forward to the reveal !

Also excited to see your new puppy, how fun. Amazing how such a tiny being can sap up such an enormous amount of time ( and energy)

    - sure you probably have it already but a hot water bottle and ticking clock in the puppy’s bed can be a comfort at night ( and gain you a couple of hours sleep too! )

    • sarah says:

thanks, I heard about the ticking clock but not the hot water bottle, and I have plenty of those, will try one of those tonight xo

      • Melinda says:

think hottie more useful than clock as is like their mothers/brothers & sisters warm body but clock is good for company so maybe throw one in and hope for a good sleep for you all !

        – Bet younger BC’s are clammering to have new baby in their rooms too – did you bags the first shift?

        • sarah says:

yes I did, but we have been told to make him sleep on his own tonight!

I will throw in a hot water bottle…this is all very new to me :-)

          • Melinda says:

its back to new baby days – take comfort in the fact that you very successfully grew 3 babies into kiddos -so your puppy is going to be all BC trained up and running in no time for sure !

its just getting through that nightime yelping thats the hard bit – oh the heartstrings x

  8. Debbie Panton says:

I’m guessing… beachy blues… I’m trying to narrow my options.. and come up with one for us too. The puppy… I bet he’s white… a terrier mix… no wait that’s us again. Bet he’s precious. Congrats on the new addition to your family.

  9. Debbie Panton says:

Just wondering…. who took the pics at the paint store???

  10. Glennie says:

Muted greys for me please. And what sort of puppy ????? You are a tease! Loving your flowery dropcloth ….. reminds me of some curtains I had in one of my first flats – I believe from memory they were teamed with orange benches, tiles, etc.

  11. Glennie says:

and what colour? (puppy of course, not walls!) x

  12. Took the plunge did you now? Puppies are cute and adorable but you better hide all of your good shoes and flip flops or you’ll very very sorry. :-) Such a tease with no puppy pics though! Accent wall…. I do love the greys… reminds me of beach stones… (secretly, I love grey more than white, but don’t tell yourself I said that). :-)

  13. Surely Sarah says:

    I’m a grey/beige girl all the way.
You know out of all those lovely photos I’m loving your vintage sheet dropcloth the most! I’m sure a few quilters would gasp in amazement that you are using it to catch paint! :)

  14. Hi sarah…

Congrats on the new puppy!!~~ how exciting..

it is almost 13 yrs to the day when we bought SOOTY (toy poodle) for Mr C’s 13th birthday…
MMM~~ i actually wanted to send this little doggie home as he whinged ALL NIGHT…
    I did the clock thing..
    the warm bottle thing…
    cuddling him thing…

    nothing worked~~~

BUT after a few days of this…he was perfect….(except for piddling everywhere on the carpet…I have learnt my lesson re that scenario)..

HE NEVER chewed anything and he has been the BEST money I have EVER spent…(he is sleeping on my knee as i type this).
He is now 13 yrs old & totally blind…

YOU will GET such joy from your new addition…And that coming from me who was NEVER a doggie person..
AND your children will embrace him/her with such JOY that i think it will amaze you…

so I cannot wait to hear all about him/her…what name?? what poodle cross>>??

anyway..I would really like to see a putty type colour…i think one can become a bit more tired re a blue scenario…

    xx andrea

  15. Nicola says:

Yeh, I was wondering who took the paint store pics too, I would have laughed if you a had gotten one of the staff to take them!!
Please can we have pics of the puppy soon! :)

  16. Your puppy sounds like my toddler! Look forward to seeing the pics soon xx

  17. Tammi says:

I’m not yet sold on the feature wall, though I know you will no doubt make me eat my words :)
I am rather in love with that vintage sheet drop cloth, can’t get enough of them here.
We grew up with dogs. One of ours had 21 pups in two litters, if the hottie (we had a puppy pierce one) doesn’t work try an old jersey or soft toy.
Looking forward to the reveal of the pup and room.

  18. Can’t wait to see the finished paint job – always freshens things up.

  19. Rochelle says:

Can’t wait to see the puppy, bet ya bottom dollar he is white. xx

  20. tanya says:

    Congrats on the puppy

When we got our puppy in January he just would not settle in the laundry or anywhere for that matter by himself …
We persisted for a couple of nights but NO ONE was getting any sleep.
What we actually did was tie him up with about 6feet of rope just at our bedroom door and that is where he has slept in HIS bed every night since with not a single whimper or any puddles. He just loves to be near us..

    Good luck

  21. You’re such a tease Sarah- .bugger the paint sample colour pictures (although very nice they are too, and the one of Mr.Beach Cottage’s backside isn’t bad either )! I want puppy pictures!!!!!!!

  22. Anonymous says:

Aaahhh….the beauty of white!!?!! Just cannot beat it! I’m liking the putty colours, would look great with all your yummy accessories & linen, but you’ll have it looking gorgeous whatever you choose. And yes, you’ve gotta love a good filler in your life! xx

  23. Jasmine says:

Can’t wait to see what you chose! I’m drawn to Angora Blue (bottom right of the greys).

    x Jasmine

PS. What do you do with the leftover paint chip samples? You should turn them into gift tags or place tags! That’s what I do :)

  24. le_third says:

hello dear one … have you put a shirt of your – soft tee – in with the puppy in his/her basket for night – place there so they can smell you – it sometimes helps :) le xox

  25. Poppy says:

Another useful puppy tip! If he does not settle, can you get a blanket from the breeders that might smell of his mother/family? We did that with ours and it seemed to help. Also, like children, do not give into their wines too much. They have to learn that they do not totally rule the roost, thoiugh with children in the house, it can be difficult!!

  26. Selby says:

Blue!! But it’s always blue for me I always choose blue everything:)

  27. Elaine in Laguna says:

Good Morning….At least on this end….Love the beachy blues here, but grey is very on trend right now. Congrats on the puppy…I’d have everyone put away their shoes, and anything else they don’t want chewed! Wishing you fun!

  28. Cee says:

This is my first response to one of your posts though I visit you & your priceless cottage daily. I too, live in a little cottage wedged between the ocean beach and a bay for fishing boats, in a teeny little known town tucked away in NY, USA. Unfortunately I’m not the primary decorator (I live with my daughter and her family) or this place would be modeled after yours :). You do inspire however, my little corner of the cottage which is painted the top row middle blue in your samples. Obviously that’s my vote for you.

My guess is your little pup, which I’m dying to see, is white as well so as not to show paint splatter as he/she gets underfoot for the first few months?? Do share soon please!! I ride around town with two baskets (front and back) that hold my two little munchkins and there’s nothing that beats it for an apres’ beach day with my grandchildren bringing up the rear giggling at the dogs.

  29. Louise says:

Please don’t keep us waiting too long! Show us the puppy! I’d have gone for the blue. Can’t wait to see what you went for!

  30. Janet O. says:

Beachy blues! To me they are softer and warmer than whispy greys. Congratulations on the puppy! Having him sleep with towels scented with your essence will help him feel less alone. Add in some of his family’s scent for a few days, but wean him to your comforting scent. A heated pet mat or hot water bottle will help soothe him, and the ticking clock is an oldie but goodie.

  31. Ingrid says:

I like the beachy blues. Hey you could have a house in UK covered in beiges you are so lucky to have sun that’s why colour is so great.

The puppy will be the best decision I am blogging with the puppy our dog on my lap. The first couple of weeks are hard it’s a little like having a baby. But nothing beats the welcome you receive when you come home to a dog with a waggy tail. Many congratulations.

  32. Mary Kaeding says:

I’m thinking that a couple of the chips in the putty section actually answer both needs – a little bluish AND a little neurtal – can’t wait to see what you chose!

have fun with the warm bundle of love!

    Mary in MN

  33. ComfyChair says:

What fun! Whatever you choose will be perfect. All of those samples are lovely.

I just painted my bedroom a light greige – gray and beige mix – and I love it. I’ve never been a beige fan, but this is so beachy, for my eyes, and goes with light blues and pinks and all the shades of white and cream I have in trim, furniture and linens, that the room finally feels finished to me. (The sample in the top photo, second row, far right, is closest to my walls.)

Can’t wait to see your finished bedroom, and the puppy! Yay!

  34. Can’t wait to see the end product! You totally inspired the colour palette of our basement C:

  35. sue austin says:

New puppy! Your life will change – big time!!!
    I’m guessing putty wall.

  36. Candy says:

Um, not a fan of the accent wall but love the color choices so any one of them would look great. Ooh, cannot WAIT to see the puppy!! I know you’re supposed to make them sleep by themselves but our little darling always starts out in bed with us then jumps off and sleeps just inside the bedroom door till morning. It works for us but, I guess, not everyone would agree with it. Do what feels right, that’s what I say.

  37. Go for the beachy blues! Can’t wait to see the finished product!

  38. samantha says:

totally unrelated comment to the paint job presently going on which looks very white and lovely, but have you been working out and stretching a lot cause you are looking very tall and skinny!! (I’m so jealous) are those magic jeans cause I could do with some ;-)

  39. When my eyes landed on “Angora Blue” I thought that that was definitely a Beach Cottage color. Especially if your room is warm and sunny. That blue is light and kind of icy blue. I can hardly wait to hear what you chose! :)

    xoxo laurie

  40. kerrie says:

Of course I like the muted sea greys…my cottage is filled with them.

  41. alison says:

You’re asking me, the queen of indecision with colour!!?? ALL the colours are lovely.

Umm, can I borrow Mr BC to paint our main bedroom please? Mr alison won’t be happy when I run past him the idea of repainting the bedroom. I can hear him now, “But I only did it not that long ago. Look at it alison. There’s nothing wrong with it.” Blah blah blah….

He just doesn’t get that our new ensuite will clash terribly with the existing paint in the bedroom.

  42. Michelle says:

    hi Sarah

looking forward to seeing how your feature wall turns out…..as it so happens one of the cards you have there Angora Blue is what I have in our kids play room and it is the most beautiful shade of blue ever…..i did use it at quarter strength and that was just the perfect amount of blue……I told hubby if we have a boy that is the colour I will be painting his room…….I’m not usually a blue person but Angora Blue was just too nice to pass up….

  43. Jen says:

I love Seahawk – you do putty and white so well!!!
